Installation Techniques

Surface Preparation

Membrane Installation

EPDM membranes are typically installed using one of three methods: fully adhered, mechanically attached, or ballasted. Each method has its own set of benefits tailored to different building needs and structural designs.

Fully Adhered

This method involves gluing the membrane directly to the insulation layer using a special adhesive, providing enhanced stability and wind uplift resistance.

Mechanically Attached

Here, the EPDM membrane is secured to the roof deck with mechanical fasteners. This method is faster and more cost-effective, ideal for large commercial roofs.

Ballasted

In this installation, the EPDM membrane is loosely laid over the roof insulation and held in place with a layer of gravel or pavers. This method provides excellent protection and durability at a lower cost.

Maintenance and Repair

Regular Inspections

Routine inspections are recommended at least twice a year and after major weather events to ensure the integrity of the EPDM roofing system. These inspections help identify potential issues before they become major problems.

Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance tasks include cleaning drains and gutters, removing debris from the roof surface, and checking for signs of wear or damage around roof fixtures and penetrations.

Repair Techniques

EPDM roofs are relatively easy to repair. Minor punctures or tears can be quickly fixed with EPDM patches or liquid rubber designed for EPDM applications. For larger issues, sections of the membrane may need to be replaced.
